Life as a Mormon LDS Realtor in Utah County!

My conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

I grew up on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  When I was fifteen I spent many evenings studying the Book of Mormon earnestly praying to know if this book was truly God's work.  The answer to my prayer was a life changing event.  The feeling of God's love for mankind, myself and the Book of Mormon was very beautiful and powerful.  It was a beautiful experience.  I knew that the Book of Mormon was true and the His church had been restored.

In 1989 I received a mission call to the Netherlands, Amsterdam mission.  I had the opportunity to serve the Dutch people and learn to speak Dutch.  My mission was challenging due to the fact that the Dutch people in general are not interested in religion or God.  I experienced a great deal of rejection proselyting on the street and door to door.  It is interesting how my mission prepared me for my career in Real Estate.  My mission to Holland is a sweet memory.

I received my Utah real estate license in 1994.  At the time I was going to BYU and would use the evenings to ask for sale by owners for the opportunity to sell their condos or small homes.  I would knock on doors and try to get listings.  I thought the odds were amazingly good.  I seemed to get a few slammed doors like my days in Holland.  Others complained how hard it was to knock door to get listings but it seemed easy to me.  Soon I was listing dozens of condos and smaller homes around BYU .  This was the beginning to a long career.

The Sabbath Day as a Realtor in Utah County.

I love Sunday for many reasons.  It is a day our family unplugs our TV's, ipods, ipads, laptops, cell phones, xboxes, video games, internet and everything electronic.  It is a day we spend together.  It is the Lord's day.  We consider this a very special family day.  This job gives me the opportunity to attend church without interruption.  However, I have had to help a few people that have been locked out of their homes on Sunday or a pipe burst in a vacant home.

It is rare that a buyer or seller in Utah County calls a Realtor on Sunday.  I don't answer my business phones on Sunday.  This is truly a day of rest.  I have six children between the ages of 4-16.  This is a day I can catch up on any conversations I may have missed in the busy week.  I tend to be very focused on selling homes in the week and need to give my family the attention the deserve.  My close friend used to sell homes in Las Vegas.  He told me that Sunday is the busiest day as a Realtor.  Everyone wants an Open House on Sunday.  I am glad I live in the Utah County bubble!

A Realtor that Loves the People He Serves will be More Successful.

I am greatful for the opportunity to be a Realtor.  I find myself discussing my feeling, beliefs and experiences every day with my clients.  I enjoy working with both LDS people and people of other faiths and or beliefs.  I have made many good friends that have very different beliefs than I do.

As a Realtor I often work with people under duress.  Currently many people are losing their homes.  Some are getting divorced while others are having to leave Utah for better employment.  In general when a seller meets a Realtor they are usually feeling stressed.  I really enjoy trying to help people.  My business is not all about listing and selling homes.  It is much deeper.  I see the Realtors come and go that only want money.  If you love the people you serve you will be more successful.

Being an Honest Realtor in Utah County is a Must.

Several years ago I attended a closing with a very disorganized builder.  After closing the title officer locked the office door and we all went to our cars.  I thought I should double check my commission in the file on my seat.  I quickly noticed that I was overpaid about $3,000.  For a split second I thought, "Nobody would ever know if I keep the money".  My next thought, "The Lord will know."  I quickly got out of my car a ran after both cars leaving the parking lot.  I told them we need to reclose that their was a mistake.

The title office made the comment, "You are an honest person".  The builder thanked me and told me he would have never noticed.  Honesty is expected.  I don't think I did anything different than most all the Realtors in Utah County would do.  I use what I have learned in the Gospel to be a better Realtor day in and day out.  Having a good moral compass has kept me out of many bad situations. After sixteen years in the business I can tell you a Realtor gets a reputation.  I am pleased to hear family, friends and clients report to me about my reputation on the street.  A reputation can't be purchased, only earned.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a wonderful part of my life.  I have had the opportunity to travel the world.  I happened to marry a former flight attendant.  In February 2011 we visited our 57th country  (Guatemala).  We have seen many wonders of the world in our travels.   I have been blessed with selling about 850 homes in my career.  Nothing I have seen or done in my life comes close to the importance of my membership in the church.
